A true testament to the English green. Gillingham comes to bloom in the Spring with it’s broad collection of classic English parks. At the Esplanade, indulge in the open green space. Children and toddlers can roam free and wide, kick a ball, scale the climbing frames and ride the swings. The Medway Towns holds a resonant and extensive naval history, particularly in the nearby town of Chatham. The Historic Dockyard immerses you in the iconic maritime culture, whilst the nearby attractions of Fort Amherst and the Royal Engineers Museum cover other military divisions. Further afield, time-aged Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral sit side-by-side next to the River Medway, and are interesting days out for all the family to explore.
Excellent rail links connect Gillingham with the South East and London, along with a strong dual-University county presence from the University of Greenwich campus and University of Kent. Local football club Gillingham FC is popular in the area, with many local public houses stirring up a passionate atmosphere. Sporting activities are very popular, with the comprehensive Olympic-featured Medway Park offering multiple facilities such as a swimming pool running track and cycling hub. The Great Lines Heritage Park in Gillingham is a large open-space park encompassing scenic walks and play-spaces. The local area also boasts Charles Dickens’ birthplace, and Chatham Dockyard features Charles Dickens World, an exhibit paying homage to the life and works of this famous author. Gillingham also features an Silver Blades Ice Rink for all-round fun, as well as nearby Gillingham Golf Club for budding and experienced golfers. The Strand also offers an exciting day out with a swimming pool, miniature train railway, riverside play area and an outdoor gym.
There are plenty of retail opportunities available in the area, with Gillingham High Street offering an array of outlets and eateries, supported by the closeby and expansive Pentagon Shopping Centre. For those serious about shopping, the famous retail-haven Bluewater features over 300 stores, 60 restaurants and many activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
